As a current employee of Alcoa, once again, I am writing about the 7 year power contract for Intalco. A long-term power contract would finally ensure a piece of security for us and those we rub shoulders with every day within the community. I am personally one of the many Intalco employees who have already been through a loss of employment as the result of another Alcoa smelter closing its doors in 2001. Although the closure affected me positively (I was able to move across state to work at Intalco), many of those I worked with were overwhelmed by not only the loss of their jobs, but the loss of medical and retirement benefits plus the emotional stress of being unemployed and looking for a new job. Because Alcoa offers a good living wage with benefits and tries very hard to take good care of their employees, I have been able to help financially with college educations for all four of my children enabling each of them to obtain quality jobs and contribute positively to their communities. Please do not allow the recent 9th Circuit Court announcement to effect the decision to go forward with a 7 year contract for Intalco. The impact of this contract failing would be devastating to the 500 families that depend on the living wage provided by Intalco, those in the community that do business with Intalco, and the charities that have been blessed by the volunteers and dollars provided from Intalco employees. Without this contract, we are concerned about the future of Intalco and our jobs. Work quickly to execute the contract by September 30th so that the employees of Intalco can finally rest easy knowing that we have a job to go. |
